Food and Drink Tours in Galway: Tasting Walk, Whiskey Tasting or a Baking Class?
4 min read
For a first taste of the city’s food, book the Galway Food Tour: €115 per person, 2.5 hours, 4.7 stars from 113 reviews. Its page lists 10 food and drink tastings and names oysters, cheese, sushi, crab, whiskey and artisan bread. If you want something shorter or hands-on, read on.
Four options side by side
| Option | Duration | Price | What you do | Age limit on the page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galway Food Tour | 2.5 hours | €115 | Walk and taste | Ask the operator |
| Food and Culture Walking Tour | 2.5 to 3 hours | €85 | Walk, stories, tastings | Under 18 not suitable |
| Micil Distillery Tasting | 1 hour | €25 | Three tastings in a working distillery | See below |
| Irish Brown Bread and Scones Baking Class | 1.5 hours | €75 | Bake in a home kitchen, up to 6 people | Ask the operator |
The two tasting walks
The Galway Food Tour meets at McCambridge’s on Shop Street. Its page describes a morning that includes the Galway Market and says it needs at least 4 participants, otherwise you are offered a reschedule or a refund, with notice 24 hours ahead.
The Food and Culture Walking Tour meets at 9 Eyre Square and says plainly that it “isn’t a food tour, more so it is an Irish Welcome”: traditional food, modern drinks and stories about the city. It needs a minimum number too. The listing includes “hotel pickup and drop-off” in its list of items, but because the page mixes included and excluded items, confirm this with the operator before relying on it. The page lists children under 18 as not suitable, so this one is for adults.
Micil Distillery
The tasting is one hour at the distillery in Salthill (the meeting point is given as Oslo Bar, 226 Upper Salthill Road), with two styles of whiskey and a Heritage Edition poitín. The page says tours run in English or Irish, groups are limited to 20, and the minimum age to taste alcohol is 18. It also says the distillery is not wheelchair accessible. On children, it lists under-10s as not suitable and says children over 12 must be accompanied by an adult; for ages 10 to 12, ask the operator. Allow an extra 15 minutes, as tours can run over.
The baking class
Kate’s class is in her kitchen at 4 Roevehagh, Kilcolgan, a village about 14 km south-east of Galway city in a straight line; the page gives the address but no transport, so plan how you get there. You prepare brown bread and scones with her, and the page lists a tasting of what you bake. It is limited to 6 participants and the operator’s listing is labelled wheelchair accessible; confirm with the operator how you get into the house before you rely on it.
