The three walks start at 9 Eyre Square. All four listings carry the wheelchair-accessible label; ask the operator about the route and any steps before you rely on it.

The welcome walk

This is the shortest and the one to take on arrival. The guide covers Celtic and medieval influences, local music and language, and gives tips for the rest of your stay. The page puts the start at the Explore Galway office on Eyre Square, 9 Eyre Square. One reviewer followed the app’s directions to the wrong meeting point, so go by the address.

The Dark History walk

The page says it runs in the winter months and after dark, with stories of executions, hangings, murders and witch trials, and the origins of Halloween in Ireland. It lists children under 16 as not suitable. It is a good second tour after the welcome walk, not a replacement for it.

The food and culture walk

The page itself says this is not a food tour so much as “an Irish Welcome”: you walk, talk and taste your way through the centre, with traditional food and modern drinks. It lasts 2.5 to 3 hours and lists children under 18 as not suitable. It is the longest of the walks. Ask the operator how much the tastings add up to before you skip dinner, and bring a passport or ID card, which the page asks for.

The hop-on hop-off bus

The open-top bus has 13 stops, from Eyre Square and the Spanish Arch to the Blackrock Diving Tower, Salthill, the university and the cathedral, with English commentary through speakers. The ticket is valid for 24 or 48 hours. According to the page, the first bus leaves Eyre Square at 9:30 am and the last at 3:30 pm, buses run every 90 minutes (every 45 minutes in the summer months), and one loop takes 60 minutes. Choose it if you want to reach Salthill and the cathedral without walking, or for a day when your legs are tired. A reviewer who took it on day three wished they had done it on day one.

Before you go

All four tours have free cancellation up to 24 hours before. For day trips from the city, see Cliffs of Moher from Galway, and for the full list browse the Galway city tours and the Irish music and stories pages.
